EAJS Book Prize

In order to strengthen the international visibility of the EAJS and to highlight the research achievements of its members, the association has launched a new EAJS book prize. Every three years the EAJS awards the best monographs in Japanese Studies with this book prize. Members can nominate monographs in any European language published during the three-year period prior to the international conference. They will need to mail a 2 page abstract in English and three copies of the book to the EAJS office. The winners of the prize will be announced at the annual meeting.

Selection Process and Committee
A selection committee of about five senior scholars and EAJS members nominated by the EAJS Council and chaired by the currently elected EAJS president will determine which monograph to award the EAJS book prize.

Conditions
1. Author is a member of EAJS.
2. Author works at a European institution or is a European national.
3. The monograph was published after 1 April 2008 and before 31 March 2011.
4. Non-European nationals who received a university degree at a University in Europe.

Deadline for nominations of the next EAJS Book Prize is APRIL 1, 2011.

Book Prize 2008

The council of the EAJS evaluated ten books for the EAJS Bookprize 2008. The winner of the bookprize is:

Susanne Formanek: Die "böse Alte" in der japanischen Populärkultur der Edo-Zeit. Die Feindvalenz und ihr soziales Umfeld. Wien: Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 2005.

Susanne Formanek examines the history of the image of "evil old crones" in Japan from the Edo period to modern times. Gender, ageing population, changing family systems - these changes in the society of the modern era have a fundamental influence on human beings. The author demonstrates the process by which this image has been constituted and gives a critical assessment of the social background. The book is very imaginative, using its sources in an original way.

EAJS invites the winner, Susanne Formanek from Vienna, to attend the next EAJS Conference at the Association´s expense.

The second place is divided into two books:

Kristina Iwata-Weickgenannt: Alles nur Theater? Gender und Ethnizität bei der japanischkoreanischen Autorin Yû Miri. München: iudicium 2008.

Thomas Feldhoff: Bau-Lobbyismus in Japan. Institutionelle Grundlagen – Akteursnetzwerke – Raumwirksamkeit. Dortmund: Dortmunder Vertrieb für Bau- und Planungsliteratur 2005.
